Early in her career, she worked as a costume apprentice and hat designer at Neptune Theatre. She studied painting with New Brunswick Artists Jennifer Green, Joseph Percival and Carole Taylor, also attending Art courses at Mount Allison and NSCAD. Dawn taught Art in Saint John, NB schools. On returning to Nova Scotia, she studied Traditional Chinese brush painting for six years with Joseph Chan and David Hu.

Dawn was the manager of the Alice Works Project, a national pilot project providing hands-on craft business experience and work skills to women with multiple barriers to employment.

Recently she has returned to teaching Art in the public school system.

Betty MacDonald is a Dartmouth, Nova Scotia artist. Betty was born in Nova Scotia and lived most of her life by the sea. She attended Halifax Schools and Dalhousie University. Aside from assorted classes and workshops, she has worked on and developed her artistic skills at home.

Betty has been greatly inspired and encouraged by her friend Henry Purdy, a well known and distinguished Prince Edward Island artist and teacher. Her local inspiration and teacher has been Pat Burstall.

Because of her busy life as a wife, mother, teacher, and her career outside the home, she had little time to realize her long held dream of being a dedicated artist until her senior years. Her grandchildren were her first and most loved subjects. Nova Scotia fishing boats and Atlantic Ocean harbours and coves are her favorites.
